Weirdigans Organic Café is run by a collective of friends who travel to festivals and other outdoor events.
Food...We use organic produce, fairtrade where possible, and try to source fresh ingredients locally. Being organic means none of our produce contains genetically-modified ingredients. Our food is all freshly prepared on-site. It's all vegetarian and we have vegan options.
Venue...We generally operate the cafe from a 30' x 20' green canvas tent. Inside, the Weirdigans' atmosphere and decor is warm, cosy, comfy, friendly, relaxed - "like your own front room, but in the middle of a festival", remarked one happy customer. We create a small garden area with benches, flowers and flags and at night we sparkle with fairy-lights. We also have a 16ft octagonal tent which can be used instead of the big tent where space or time are limited and a second 30' x 20' tent which can be used as an annexe to the main tent or can be hired separately (see 'Special Tents').
Energy...We use a self-built 12-volt LED lighting system which is very energy efficient. Our lights and music are solar-powered. We avoid disposable packaging and recycle or compost as much of our waste as we can.
Ethos...Weirdigans is run on co-operative principles. Everyone takes a turn at washing-up, serving tea and baking cakes. There’s no owner or manager raking in profits. We take minimum wages and some of us do a lot of work on a voluntary basis because our priority is making Weirdigans a more eco, more lovely venue.
Official bits...Weirdigans has membership of NMTF (National Market Traders Federation) and is registered with Calderdale Council. References and copies of all legal documents (insurance, Health & Safety policy, Food Hygiene & 1st Aid certificates, fire safety checks etc.) can be provided on request.
And more things we do...Weirdigans are also involved in: green education; street and festival performance including all kinds of music and circus skills; tent-making and tent hire; housing and workers' co-operatives; tree planting projects and organic bars for private events.
