The Devonshire Red is everything a chicken should be. A lively, robust and slow growing breed reared only on West Country family-run farms in three high welfare systems.
The Devonshire Red breed is exclusive to Devon-based poultry company Lloyd Maunder Ltd., which supplies supermarkets nationwide. The company was the first to pioneer free range chicken for the retail market in 1996 and then, in 2000, was awarded the first licence to produce organic chicken under the Soil Association symbol.
During this time Lloyd Maunder was also searching for a breed of chicken more suited to these new rearing methods. In 2003 the Devonshire breed – now known as the Devonshire Red - was introduced to Lloyd Maunder’s organic and free range farms. In 2004 the new birds were also introduced to it’s RSPCA Freedom Food farms.
The Devonshire Red’s characteristic strong legs, slower growth rate and naturally inquisitive nature make it ideal for these higher welfare production systems, producing a table bird that has a fabulous flavour and succulent texture.
