Beltane at Thornborugh 2013 Beltane at Thornborough 2013 - Sun May 5th - Starting at 12 noon, at Thornborough Henge in North Yorkshire. FREE Entry - Everyone Welcome. Camping is available at the Henge on Sat and Sun nights (May 4th & 5th).
What to do and what to bring.. Beltane at Thornborough Henge is an annual gathering of people of diverse beliefs and all ages who come together to celebrate the beginning of summer and the beauty, magic and mystery of our ancient landscape.
We encourage everyone to dress-up in their most exotic festival clothing: cloaks, head-dresses, masks and other costumes help to create the real spirit of Beltane!
Anyone attending the event is also welcome to 'do their own thing' and celebrate Beltane in their own way.
Musicians, performers, didgeridoo players and drummers, please come along and help us to raise energy on the day.
Camping for the Beltane weekend: Camping is available in a field adjacent to Thornborough Henge on Saturday and Sunday nights. There is no compulsory charge for camping, but there will be a voluntary donation box.
In order to ensure that we can cover the costs of providing the campsite, we suggest a minimum donation of £3 per adult per night. (In the event that we collect more than we need, any surplus will be donated to a local good cause).
Having a stall at the event Stalls at the event are absolutely FREE, but please contact us the receive details of where they can be pitched.
Helping out with the event We are always looking for people to help out with this FREE event doing anything from stewarding the car-parking to having a speaking (or shouting!) role in the ceremony.
The Mystery of Thornborough Henge Thornborough Henge is a 5000 year old stone age monument consisting of three giant circular earthworks. The entire complex is over a mile in length and the layout of the three Henges resembles that of the three stars found in the centre of the Orion constellation. The Henge monument would have aligned almost perfectly with these three stars on Winter Solstice (the shortest day) 5000 years ago.
The Ancient Festival of Beltane Beltane is one of four Celtic quarter-days that mark the passing of the seasons in the year. It is celeberated at the beginning of May, the other festivals are: Lughnasa (August), Samhain (November) and Imbolc (February).
The festival is associated with fire, courtship and the renewal of nature following spring. Beltane was traditionally celebrated throughout the north of England and beyond as a season of 'hilarity, merry-making and good humour'.
