WHY BUY ORGANIC?
To help to keep you and your family healthy and to protect the planet on which we live, organic fruit, vegetables & all other organically produced foods do not contain a cocktail of potentially harmful pesticide residues. They also have higher levels of vitamins, minerals and other micro -nutrients. Organic produce is also GM free and that’s got to be a huge plus. Locally produced food is also healthier. The time taken for the food to get from harvest to table is minimised, therefore retaining more of the nutrients and cutting down on transportation costs and damage to the environment.
Lots more people are now choosing to buy organic food. Sales have risen by 30% in the last year! We think the number one reason is that the taste is wonderful, so different from the non organic equivalent. It tastes like food used to taste years ago, as if you have picked it from your own garden. But there are many more reasons……...
We all know the importance of getting our 5-a-day, but eating five organic fruit and vegetables a day is even better. A non-organic apple can be sprayed up to 16 times with 36 different chemicals, many of which simply cannot be washed off. The latest Government tests carried out in 2005, found pesticides in 44% of non-organic fruit and vegetables samples. The results were even worse for non-organic apples, with 80% of samples containing pesticides. 150 of the commonly used pesticides are potentially cancer causing!
On average, organic food contains higher levels of vitamin C and essential minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron and chromium as well as cancer-fighting antioxidants. Organic food doesn't contain food additives which can cause health problems such as heart disease, osteoporosis, migraines and hyperactivity. Amongst the additives banned by the Soil Association are hydrogenated fat, aspartame (artificial sweetener) and monosodium glutamate. Over 400 chemical pesticides are routinely used in conventional farming and residues are often present in non-organic food. The UK government has recently found high levels of pesticide residues in baby food, spinach, dried fruit, bread, apples, celery, and chips.
