Welcome to Bishopston Trading Company
Our main fabrics are fine hand-woven organic cotton and a slightly more sturdy organic cotton calico which is woven on small electric powered looms. All our organic cotton is grown from non GM seed in the northern state of Gujarat, and is certified by both SKAL and the Fairtarde Foundation.
Our organic denim is woven and softwashed for us in South India and made up in K.V. Kuppam.
We also produce garments in noil silk, cotton lawn, cotton corduroy and velvet.
K.V.Kuppam has long been a centre for cotton handloom weaving - so the beautiful Madras cotton was the basis for our trading relationship.
19 meter long warp threads are stretched out in the streets around the weavers quarter. A weaver can produce up to 3 meters of cloth per day.
A power-loom can produce up to 50 meters of cloth per day
The cloth is then washed, guaranteeing that the clothes will not shrink once made.
The K.V. Kuppam Tailoring Societies employ 232 cutters, tailors and hand-finishers who turn this lovely fabric into clothes, bags and many other products.
All employees are paid above the average wages but more importantly are provided with full secure employment throughout the year.
The Society members have a provident fund, retirement gratuity, sickness benefit and access to health care.
