Drovers Hill Farm, A Traditional Mixed Organic Farm, Located in the Chilterns
- Quality organic meat from traditional British breeds - Traditionally made apple juices - Supplying a local market to reduce food miles - Promoting better, sustainable farming practices
Drovers Hill Farm is a family business founded in September 2006. It is a mixed farm having livestock, an orchard and cereal crops. The aim being for the farm to be self sufficient for both animal feeds and energy requirments. The first section of our orchard is now planted with over fifteen varieties of apples and other top fruit. Two more five acre blocks will be planted in the coming years. The fruit will be used to make juices and cider. The apple pomace will be fed to the livestock or composted. We use natural methods to control pests and fungus. To feed the trees we use compost made on the farm and organic folia sprays.
A Traditional Mixed Organic Farm The main purpose of the livestock is to provide meat which we then sell directly to our customers. We currently have a flock of pedigree Lleyn sheep. This breed make goood mothers and stay outside all year round, although they come inside during lambing. A herd of Oxford Sandy and Black pigs have now been established. Look out for organic pork. The livestock also provide the farm with a natural fertiliser which benefits the orchard, grazing leys and cereals.
Lodge Hill is a SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) being made up of rough grazing, scrub and woodland. This area of the farm has the Ridgeway Trail running across the top of it into the neighbouring part of Lodge Hill. Lodge Hill has also been an area of open access for many years. We are managing the woodland to improve it and its sustainability and to provide a fuel source for the farm. We have planted new hazel copices to provide a fuel source for the future and these areas also provide good wildlife habitats. The farm should be self sustaining in electricity and heat, giving the jucies and ciders we produce a minimal carbon footprint.
