Organic Farming Tregellast Barton farm has always been home to Channel Island cows. Jerseys and Guernsey cows produce particularly rich milk which is ideal for making into ice cream. Now the farm has grown to 200 acres and has 100 milking Jersey Cows. We have always farmed here without the use of pesticides and artificial fertilisers. In 1995 we applied to the Soil Association and now both the land and the herd are certified, fully organic.
All our land is in permanent pasture, i.e. it is never broken (ploughed). This enables the undisturbed, natural varieties of meadow grasses and clover to develop their own healthy and nutritious ecosystem in the top soil. The only fertiliser used is composted cow dung, spread over the fields when the land is dry enough. We take pride in our old field patterns of tiny meadows and their shaggy hedgerows and they are rich in wildlife too!
Because organic farming doesn't involve the use of chemicals and pesticides, you can be sure that all you are getting with our milk is the goodness that's naturally in it. Plus according to research by the University of Newcastle, organic milk (when compared to non organic) has higher levels of Vitamin E, Omega 3 essential fatty acids and antioxidants, which help beat infections. So doing it organically has benefits for us as well as the wildly beautiful countryside that the farm sits in.
